Speaking of attraction spots in Central, probably no one would be unfamiliar with the iconic steps in Stone Slabs Street. Though the street does not occupy a large area, it is of high cultural value. It is a mix of Chinese and Western style as Hong Kong is formerly a British colony. Giving a nostalgic feeling, it allures tourists worldwide.
Climbing the granite steps, you can feel that the path is rather precipitous. It is nearly 45°. The uneven stone steps make it even more tiring to walk up. Though we wore sneakers, still we stumbled and nearly fell down. Therefore, here is a friendly reminder for ladies who come for photos, think twice about whether you would really come here with high heels.
The most worth mentioning thing is the creative street art on the handrails. It has surely added colours to this place. Crocheted animals are attached on the railings to bring out the message ‘respect animal rights’. Not only does it embellish the area, it also raises people’s awareness towards the social issue of animal abuse. Still, there are various old stalls all over this street in the lower section. The appearance of shops preserves the style of old Hong Kong. The army green metal huts are stores which sell a wide range of products |
Those fancy dresses particularly caught my eyeballs. The shop sells costumes, wigs, masks, to name but a few. No wonder it is a treasure island for party goers - they can grab all seasonal decorations here when festival is around the corner. You may also try to bargain! Most prices are negotiable, especially when you are buying numerous items at a time.
The other shop offers traditional Chinese style accessories and jewelry, some of them are handmade. Through chatting with the shop owner, I got to know that those accessories were very popular in the old days. |
Hanging on the ceiling was some red lanterns and decorative handicrafts - Chinese knots. They are in red, connoting ‘luck’. Nowadays, one can rarely find such traditional handicraft elsewhere.
If you are planning for your weekend trip, Stone Slabs Street will certainly be a nice place to explore!
